‘HOBIE DOUBLE FOR VOAK & ROWORTH’
The wait was well worthwhile for the RCIYC Hobie Fleet crews after the Cat Dash race from St Ouens to St Aubins bay was cancelled on Sunday due to unsuitable conditions and rescheduled for yesterday evening.
With the five safety ribs just waiting offshore the Fleet launched their boats through the surf in excellent sailing conditions and bright sunshine for the race back to St.Aubins bay.
The race to Corbiere was quick in the moderate northwesterly wind, the downwind leg to Noirmont proved interesting and tactical as the Hobie 16’s manoeuvred ready for the upwind on passing Noirmont to the finish at the Gunsite beach. For those spectators watching from Noirmont point looking down on the Hobies passing below was a spectacular sight.
At the front of the Fleet it was Adrian Jesson with crew Ava Martin and National Hobie 16 Champion team Ollie Voak and Megan Roworth, they swopped places and were neck and neck all the way, until Voak and Roworth managed to get their noses in front a hundred or so metres from the finish to place first after an hour and a half of great nip and tuck competition, Jesson and Martin came second with Aaron le Cornu and Rachael Smith close behind in third. The Youth team of Jamie and Archie Willetts sailed well to place sixth, also the two female helms Giselle Barrowcliffe sailing with husband Charlie and Katie Bacquet with husband Antione sailed into good positions, special credit to Katie who was helming her first race.
All in all, it was fitting end to the thrilling and exciting Surf and Bay races in St.Ouens, held on the previous Saturday.
