ESTIMATING SERVICES CAT DASH & SURF RACES ST OUENS BAY, JERSEY

SATURDAY 5th JULY.

Spectators were treated to colourful action as Hobie Cats raced through the surf and back in the Estimating Services Bay Races held at Jersey’s premier surfing beach. Even cars travelling along the Five Mile road were stopping when they spotted the surf sailing with people coming to the beach to witness the energised thrills and spills of the amazing surf racing!

The surf break at Le Braye produced a solid swell and steady on shore south westerly wind gusting to 20kts at times enabling the Cats to speed through the waves, making it spectacular and thrilling for the 40 crew on the two person Hobie 16’s crew participating, as evidenced by their big smiles each time they returned to the beach.

The RCIYC Hobie Fleet teams handled the waves and wind in impressive style, there were a couple of capsizes, somewhat expected, given the sometimes challenging conditions, but all in all it was a fantastic and fun experience for the Fleet to be back in St.Ouen’s Bay, where it all started for Hobie Cat activity in Jersey in 1983.

Surf Club pioneers and original Hobie Sailors, Dave Grimshaw, Barry Jenkins and David Beaugeard were on hand to judge the day’s best wave ride.

A BBQ and Prize Giving was held after racing at the beach where Adrian Jesson and his company Estimating services were specially thanked for sponsoring the event as were the rib crews who did such sterling work in challenging conditions, also the Beach team for making it all move seamlessly along with race changeovers and compiling results.
